Assistive Technology
In EDIT 704, we discussed the implications of technology in the classroom and the effect on students who do not have equal access. In addition, today's learners are more diverse in their knowledge of technology. Discovering technology that will interest learners, give them more access, and not cause harm, will benefit individual learners as well as the class as a group. In programming and project management courses, there is a great need for more practical learning. The research in this course helped me find several new technologies that I now use to guide student projects in project management (Trello, gamification, and portfolio tools).
In this course, we researched a number of technologies and how they could be used in the classroom for users with a variety of needs. In one assignment, I researched assistive technology, specifically screen readers. Other briefs included mobile devices and educational games. Click here to view the brief on assistive technology. Annotated Bibliographies
Research and in-depth understanding of technology and learning principles is key in developing appropriate learning content. As a member of the technology world, the psychology of learning is not something I knew anything about before starting this degree program. I soon discover the importance of understand how an individual can view content differently than their neighbor sitting in the same classroom. It became important to me to know how the brain interprets signals and relays messages. All of the knowledge gained from this research has been put to use in my instruction when developing multimedia content, when searching for new textbooks, when trying to choose open education resources, and when building learning objects for my students.
