I met with the programming faculty who would use the new Zybooks tool during the fall semester. The goal of the meeting was to complete a needs assessment and to determine if each instructor had ever used Zybooks and if they understood its difference from the former static textbook and online companion. The questions asked would assist me in developing a strategy for implementing Zybooks and determining content for the on-boarding guide (SLO1).
One instructor had used Zybooks in another course and did not believe they would have an issue; however, those using the prior text wondered how this tool would insert into their current learning management system (Moodle) content and where they would obtain content for quizzes and homework. They also had questions concerning grading of content in Zybooks and whether the semester project would be a part of the tool lab system or a separate assignment per usual.
A lot of questions, right? I ensured the instructors that they would have content available from the prior text to supplement instruction and that the Zybooks would not be a disruption to their current way of teaching. The Zybooks tool is an interactive platform meant to prepare students prior to lecture and that they would only need to change their pedagogy in the area of pre-assessment assignments. There was some skepticism that this transition would be easy or seamless.
Once all the questions were asked, I provided the following list of resources that would be available during the transition:
Zybooks - Introduction to Java Programming
Instructions for configuration, LMS setup with weekly templates (lecture and lab), and lab assignments (will become the content of the on-boarding guide)
Link to One Drive folder (contains the content listed in item #2 and the future guide)
The above content is shown in the images below. I forgot to take pictures of the faculty in this first meeting, but I will in our next meeting planned for September 12, 2018.
